Description

The new Charles R. Jonas Federal Courthouse will meet the long-term needs of the U.S. District Courts in Western North Carolina.

The new 198,000 square-foot court house annex will have ten (10) courtrooms and fifteen (15) Judge’s chambers. Housing the U.S. Circuit, District, and Magistrate courts, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, The Federal Public Defender, Probation, and GSA Public Building Services.

The Repair & Alteration of the Historic Charles R. Jonas Courthouse will improve security and accessibility, upgrade to GSA Design Excellence standards for energy-efficiency, enhance life safety features and abate hazardous materials while improving tenant and public interior spaces.

KLG Jones is providing full com missioning services for the building heating, ventilating and air conditioning services, lighting and power distribution systems, fire alarm systems and the building envelope. KLG Jones has been a team member since conceptual design phase and will continue through tenant occupancy phase. We have performed multiple design reviews, participated in VE and Peer Review meetings, conducted a commissioning kickoff meeting, witnessed system startups and on site system testing and performed various site inspections during construction.

The HVAC systems include a water cooled chilled water plant with cooling towers located on the roof and heating hot water system that is shared by both the new annex and the renovated courthouse. Air handling units with chilled water coils and hot water preheat coils provide conditioned air to the space through variable air volume terminal units with hot water reheat coils. Telecommunication and IT rooms are served by DX variable refrigerant units.

The new federal courthouse has a LEED target of Gold certification. The projects will incorporate Energy Star rated equipment, high efficiency lighting, water conservation plumbing, and low-emitting materials in both facilities.
