Description

The new RMIC Data Center located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA, was commissioned by KLG Jones using full integrated systems testing methodology. RMIC is a financial services provider.

The data center machine room floor is cooled by four Liebert water/glycol cooled Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units that discharge under the raised floor. Air is discharged from perforated floor tiles into the hot aisles of the machine room. Three air-cooled dry coolers on the roof cool the water/ glycol mixture and return it to the CRAC units in the data room via a redundant riser piping system. The data room HVAC system is controlled locally, and monitored by a Liebert Site-Link system as well as an ALC control system for the drycooler pumps.

The data room Electrical system includes a redundant supply of normal 480/277V power to the building switchboards in the main electrical room. An emergency back-up system powered by a 500 kW Caterpillar generator and Liebert 360 kW and 100 kW UPS’s provide standby power in the event of a power outage. 500 kVA transformers step down the voltage to 208/120V which is then distributed to Liebert panelboards located on the data room floor. Cables routed under floor supply power from the panelboards to the racks.

KLG Jones provided full integrated systems testing of the HVAC, electrical (normal and emergency) power systems including UPS, and building automation control system. KLG Jones provided load banks to simulate full load conditions and coordinated all testing. The results of the testing indicated that the cooling capacity of the CRAC units was as specified, the generator started and functioned properly, and the UPS battery capacity was as specified. A few issues were encountered with the dry coolers serving the CRAC units.
