Description

The MUSC West Ashley Campus— Medical Pavilion is a renovation and repurpose of a retail department store. It offers comprehensive specialty clinics, outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging and infusion procedures. It also includes support services such as a lab and a pharmacy. Located in the Citadel mall in the West Ashley area of Charleston, the 128,000squarefoot facility has been designed to service the medical needs of the local community. The facility opened in January 2020.

The West Ashley Medical Pavilion utility services include chilled water generated by air-cooled chillers and heating hot water from multiple high efficiency condensing boilers. Multiple air-handling units serve terminal units, with hot-water reheat located throughout the space. Space pressure is actively controlled and maintained in critical spaces such as operating rooms and the pharmacy.

Normal electrical distribution is provided by SCE&G to a pad mounted to a 15kV utility transformer. Power is stepped down to 480V and  utilized within the building for various equipment, including, but not limited to, lighting, motor loads and imaging modalities. Power is further stepped down for receptacle use and other 120V/208V loads via appropriate transformers mounted within the building. Emergency power for the Medical Pavilion is produced locally via a 1,000 kW generator.

Additional building services include central medical vacuum, compressed medical air, piped medical gases, fire protection and detection, and storm and sanitary sewer systems.

KLG Jones provided full commissioning services for the mechanical systems, including the creation of functional performance tests specific to each piece of equipment. All of the test and balance work was validated through random sampling techniques.
