KLG Jones provided full integrated systems testing for the new Information Technology Building at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The project consists of a 5 story building containing offices and mechanical and electrical spaces required to support the main campus computing facility. The machine floor is designed with cooling capacity and power distribution to support a load of 250 Watts/square foot on the high density side and 100 Watts/ square foot on the low density side for a total load of 2 megawatts.
Air conditioning is provided by a combination of chilled water CRAC units supplying air to the underfloor air distribution system and Liebert XDO/ XDP units located overhead in the cold aisles.
Perforated floor tiles supply air to the lower level racks and the XDO units cool the upper level server racks.
The facility is mission critical for the University and contains a number of redundant systems to increase reliability. Redundant capacity is provided in the air conditioning system. Power is fed to the building from two separate substations. An emergency generator and a three section UPS system provide emergency back up power. One section of the UPS is redundant with two sections able to carry the load for 20 minutes. Chilled water and steam are supplied from the campus distribution systems which have multiple central plants connected to the loops.
KLG Jones provided full commissioning services including full integrated systems testing of the machine floor and support systems, functional testing of all mechanical, electrical and emergency power systems, failure mode testing of all redundant systems, and thermal imaging of battery connections, electrical panels, PDUs and mechanical equipment.
