Description

The Garwood Hall Lab and Academic Space renovation project on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina consisted of the renovation or computer and research labs, Lecture Halls, Classrooms, and support spaces. The $2.3 Million renovation was completed in the summer of 2019.

Mechanical systems included a new air handling unit and two new Exhaust fans serving the renovated lab spaces through laboratory supply terminal units with hot water reheat and fume hood exhaust terminal units. Lecture halls and offices are served by VAV terminal units with hot water reheat. The chilled water and hot water systems were upgraded with the addition of new pumps. Ductless split systems serve the support areas. All systems are monitored and controlled by a campus wide building automation system and graphical user interface.

KLG Jones provided full commissioning services of the Mechanical, Lighting, and domestic water systems. The design and construction level drawings were reviewed during the design phase of the project. Commissioning specifications and a commissioning plan were prepared. The MEP submittals were reviewed in parallel with the A/E team. Periodic site visits were made during construction to inspect the progress and the installation of the systems being commissioned and to hold commissioning meetings. Functional performance test scripts were created based on the design documents and functional performance testing of the MEP systems was conducted in conjunction with the contractors. Verification of all the fume hoods and exhaust system performance was key to a safe working lab environment. The test and balance work was validated through random sampling techniques. The building automation system and graphical user interface was verified during functional performance testing. A complete deficiency list was maintained throughout the project and a commissioning final report was created.
